Please Don't Be Offended

Updated: Mar 21, 2023

Dear Mama,

Please don’t be offended if I don’t ask to hold your baby when I come visit.

Truth be told, I adore babies and their intoxicating newborn smell as much as the next person, but I can only imagine how many times your tiny, new gift has been passed around since her arrival. The reason that I intentionally don’t ask is because I want to communicate to you that I am here for you – to see you, listen to you, and help you in any way I can. But if that does include you needing me to hold your precious babe so that you can do something else for a moment, I will gladly oblige.

I also want to encourage you that it is okay to want time just to yourself with your baby.

It’s okay to refuse someone asking to hold her.

It’s okay to not want visitors.

It’s okay to do whatever you need for as long as you need.

You just grew an entire person for the better part of a year and gloriously but exhaustingly brought forth that life. Healing from that takes a while.

Take all the time you need.
